There were six 280 E rally cars in all at the start, supervised by Erich Waxenberger and given works back-up, and four of them achieved top ten places at the finish. The cars were basically the standard saloon models which had been adapted with special wheels and chassis modifications and given tough sand plates instead of bumpers.
